A8V0160 Charge Pump

This integrated external gear pump matches Rexroth A8VO160 series axial piston main pump. It is installed coaxially at the rear of main pump, rotating synchronously with engine.
It supplies steady pilot pressure, lubricates internal parts and compensates oil leakage. Effectively prevents cavitation and protects core components. Ideal for 25-35 ton heavy construction machinery, delivering stable performance under tough working conditions.

1.Do I need to install the Charge Pump separately? What should I pay attention to when replacing it?

No, it is integrated with the main pump and does not require separate installation. When replacing, ensure that the spline shaft is accurately aligned with the main pump drive shaft, tighten the fixing screws with a torque wrench, keep the contact surface flat and free of impurities, and use a seal ring of the correct size to ensure sealing performance.



2.What preparations are needed before starting the Charge Pump for the first time?


Manually fill the charge pump with clean hydraulic oil through the drain port to empty the internal air and avoid dry running damage. Jog start several times to confirm that the rotation direction is clockwise (when viewed from the shaft end), and there is no abnormal sound or oil leakage before formal operation. In addition, manually turn the main shaft to check the self-priming condition of the charge pump.



3.What are the requirements for hydraulic oil when using the Charge Pump?


To ensure stable operation and extend service life:
  • Oil Type: Anti-wear hydraulic oil (AW grade) meeting ISO 11158 standards is required.

  • Viscosity: ISO VG 46 or VG 68 is recommended for most operating conditions.

  • Filtration: Oil cleanliness of ISO 4406 18/15 or better is essential to prevent premature wear and damage to precision components.

  • Temperature: Operating oil temperature should be kept between 15–65°C for optimal performance.


4. Can the rotation direction of the  Charge Pump be reversed? What are the consequences of reverse rotation?


The rotation direction of the charge pump cannot be arbitrarily reversed. It is factory-calibrated to match the main pump and engine specifications.
If the pump is operated in reverse rotation:
  • No oil suction or pressure build-up: The gear meshing and internal flow passages are designed for one-way rotation, so the pump will fail to deliver oil, causing main pump cavitation.

  • Severe internal damage: Reversed oil flow leads to insufficient lubrication and increased friction, which can quickly damage gears, bearings, and the pump body.

  • System failure: Without proper charge pressure, the main pump will lose control, leading to equipment malfunction or even complete shutdown.


5. Is the Charge Pump a dedicated accessory? Can it work normally without it?


The charge pump is a dedicated, indispensable accessory designed to work with the main piston pump. It cannot be replaced by a generic pump, as it is matched to the main pump’s pressure, flow, and interface requirements.
The main pump cannot operate normally without the charge pump:
  • It cannot build the required low-pressure charge oil to prevent cavitation, leading to severe damage to internal components.

  • There will be no pilot control pressure to operate the main pump regulator, travel motors, and control valves.

  • Without forced lubrication and leakage compensation, the main pump will quickly overheat and fail under load.


6.Can the displacement of the Charge Pump be replaced arbitrarily?


The displacement cannot be replaced arbitrarily.

It is matched with main pump parameters. Improper displacement will cause unstable pressure, insufficient lubrication or system overload, easily damaging pump parts and affecting normal equipment operation.

1.How does the variable displacement work?

The pump's flow is adjusted by changing the angle of an internal swash plate. As the swash plate angle changes, the stroke length of the pistons varies, which in turn changes the volume of fluid displaced per rotation, allowing the flow rate to adapt to the system's needs.
